Form & Function — Architectural features such as trellises (shown above), pergolas, utility sheds, awnings, and wall-mounted shading structures can be used to harness the sun's energy, where desirable roof-space for solar is not available.
This solution was designed for a custom home to completely hide the solar system above a flat roof recessed between gable roofs all around. The solar array was constructed with trusses anchored to two load-bearing parapet walls. REgrid Power performed both engineering and installation, conforming to all applicable building codes.
Sloped roofs occasionally require more specialized installation methods. In this case, the challenge was safeguarding a roof of brittle, 90-year-old antique Spanish tile. We carefully lifted the tiles and replaced the roof beneath the solar array with more durable and less expensive composition shingles.
After the solar array had been installed, a façade of Spanish tiles was replaced around the periphery of the panels. The result was a beautifully integrated solar array that retains the home’s original architectural character.
